Chicago Wash Station Design for Produce Safety and Efficiency

  • Farm on Odgen 3555 Ogden Avenue Chicago, IL, 60623 United States (map)

Come learn about wash/pack station design for produce safety and efficiency, and leave with your very own portable handwashing station!

About this Event

We know that farmers are always looking to improve washing and packing spaces and to make them easier to clean, more pleasant to use, less wasteful in terms of time and movement, and improved for produce safety. After an introduction to FSMA's Produce Safety Rule, this workshop will dive into the Rule's requirements and suggestions related to washing and packing spaces. While the session will focus on food safety, it will also touch on increasing efficiency, body-saving innovations, cost-saving measures, and more. We will tour Farm on Ogden's washing and packing space to brainstorm how we could put these practices to work, and each participant will make and take home a portable handwashing station. We'll answer tricky on-farm food safety questions specifically, so come with questions about your own farm!

This conversation will be led by Maggie Kaiser, an urban farmer and nursery grower, who also helps farmers navigate FSMA's Produce Safety Rule for the National Young Farmers Coalition and facilitates various trainings on the subject. In addition to this workshop, Maggie would be happy to have one-on-one produce safety farm walks with beginning farmers leading up to the workshop or afterward. Reach out at maggie@youngfarmers.org.
